Red Riding Hood has killed her Grandmother ‘G’ so she can take her 5 million pound that she had in her house which wasn’t in the bank because Grandmother ‘G’ didn’t trust the banks. RRH has just finished college and has got lots of songs she wants to record and release, but she can’t pay…
We were tasked with creating a news report regarding Red Riding Hood’s grandmother being killed, while breaking as many privacy rules as possible.
This is our second assignment, creating a film with a team each covering a different scenario for a character after they have had a cup of tea.
Above is my design for our first client brief, from upcoming band “The Who Ya’s”. We were tasked to create an EP album cover for the band, who are heavily influenced by artists such as the ‘Go Team’ who deem themselves an eclectic mix of indie, pop and hip hop, and also the band the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs. They have design influences from such album covers as The Sex Pistols: Never Mind The Bollocks and Pink Floyd: The Dark Side of the Moon, so we were required to make something along the same kind of lines.
The client wanted something that has resemblance to being handmade, as well as the design not being too ‘polished’ as well as it being somewhat sketchy. Using techniques of hand printing using black ink and different objects, I created the handmade feel needed for the project, which I later incorporated into the design.
This work, I feel, is suitable for the client and the audience, as it resembles a handmade element styled piece, as well as being still quite simplistic and similar in some ways to the influences they suggested. Although the Yeah, Yeah, Yeahs generally use photography in their design work, I decided not to, though now looking back on the design I feel it may have been a good addition.
The colours I used were varied but they were also ones that I felt contrast each other well in this design. Having the blue background instead of a white one or a different colour would now be one of the things I would change; having used blue for the artist text I feel that it may be better not to have used it as the background.
The typography used I consider quite indie, and once I had incorporated the cog design I had taken from my previous printing, I implemented it into the EP cover.
The texture on the front and also overlapping on the back and side is my favourite piece of the design, after being added after it was considered my cover was not initially covering the task brief of using handmade elements. Once added it, it gives the album far more precedence towards the requirements of the artist for their EP.
I would say that this album cover requires all of the set criteria for the brief, but also that it goes beyond what is required and gives a good design for the band to use for their artwork. The design works in many ways such as how it gives a large amount to handmade elements, as well as making it not too polished and still quite sketchy.
The artist stated that the work they wanted would be influenced by some designs already produced, one of which was The Stone Roses self titled album. This is inspired by Pollock and though my work doesn’t look massively similar on first viewing, there are some similarities. It gives quite a simplistic design, as well as using a handmade element.
